Mission Beach

On the 28th of December me and my step brothers are travelling down to Mission Bay, San Diego. My brother rented a passenger van so we are planning on driving down to California within a couple days making stops along the way. We have booked many camp sites along the way outside of Seattle, Portland and Oakland. The reason why we are all travelling down south for the winter is primarily for the main activity of surfing. We have planned many day trips along the way to beaches that are optimal for their surfing potential and in correlation with swells during that time period.

Ocean swells are basically far off storms that affect the movement of current patterns. These far off storms create great amounts of wind that can affect the flow of the ocean. The movement of the sea can move for  thousands of miles in some cases with minor dissipation. These conditions are ideal for surfers because they produce smooth large rolling waves that often curl producing a tubular effect further offshore ( much like the pictures one would see in surfing magazines). These swells do not occur very often and can be predicted through the use of meteorological programs or even through a mathematical formula. Some of these programs have even been made into iPhone apps making the information more readily available and easier to understand.

Surfing is an important aspect to a select amount of countries tourism percentages. Many of these countries put emphasis on their surfing conditions in order to target certain demographics that may place interest on these activities. Advertising to this demographic can help bring new people into the country in order to stimulate the economy. Some of these places might even develop competitions and championships that bring people from around the world. This exposure to many different cultures enables the community to move forward and make progress.

An example of this motive for tourism is me and my brothers travelling to California for the sole reason of surfing. Because of our interest in regards to the surf conditions in California we are more likely to spend moneys at attractions such as universal studios etc etc supporting local businesses and stimulating the economy.

I have never been more excited for any trip than I am for this one because of its nomadic like nature and the amount of surfing that I will be able to do. The conditions should be perfect also adding to my excitement. As a child i grew up in Tofino B.C. for a decent part of my life. This is where I first learned how to ride a board and ever since my first day of surfing nearly ten years ago, I have always made my travel decisions based on that aspect.
