Air Travel - Improved!

I think that the majority of us can agree that the most painful thing about travelling by air, is being stuck on a plane for an extended period of time. The following lists a few things I do in attempts to make the flight a little easier to handle. Hopefully they work for you as well!

1. Pack light

Refer back to my post on 7 Things you Don't Need on Your Packing List for some packing tips, and try to travel with as little as possible. Packing a separate bag for carry-on, like a purse (or a small gym bag for the men) that can be stowed under the seat in front of you, is very convenient for keeping your in-flight essentials close. Earbuds, iPod, novel (or kindle), lip balm, sleeping pills, toothbrush, or anything you may want quick access to without having to go in and out of the overhead bins should be packed in this bag. This also prevents you from having to manoeuvre around your neighbours every time your lips dry out.

2.     Wear comfortable clothing

Being uncomfortable on a plane in inevitable. The seats are small, someone is always taking your arm rest, and you will never have enough leg room. Why add to that discomfort by wearing tight pants, bulky jeans or a restrictive blazer. If you must look a certain way upon arrival (like if you have a big business meeting to rush to), bring a change of clothes to get into right before landing (this could also be a good opportunity to utilize that toothbrush!). And ladies, a lengthy flight is a great time to utilize those lululemons.

3. Download movies

Have you ever walked onto a plane, looking forward to checking out the movie selection, only to sit down and realize the TV system is down? If you require that TV to get you through a lengthy flight, always travel with a backup. Packing a fully charged electronic device of your own, with pre-downloaded movies or shows is never a bad idea. It's amazing how quickly a flight can go by after watching a movie or two!

4. Pack snacks

Many people are under the misconception that you cannot bring your own food onto an airplane. Snacks and meals that are purchased or prepared before going through security are perfectly acceptable (excluding liquids). Certain items like bulk fruits and meat can be restricted at customs, but most items are okay. Being hungry on the airplane and having only bagged sandwiches to choose from can definitely hinder your mood, so plan your own in-flight meal, and eat something you actually enjoy (great way to save money as well)!

5. Pack a scarf

The air on planes is something that really gets to me. Breathing in the recycled air that circulates the plane (filled with germs) can be a really gross thought. I am not sure this does anything or if it's just mental, but having a scarf to cover my mouth with while lounging on the plane makes me feel a bit better as it can act as a filter. I also like to take daily doses of oil of oregano a week or so pre-vacation to build up my immune system before getting on a stuffy flight.

6. Stay hydrated

Not only is the air filled with germs, but it is also super dry and can dehydrate us pretty quickly. To avoid feeling the effects of dehydration when you land, drink as much water as you can access while in the air. Water is complimentary on most flights, so bring an empty water bottle and have the attendants keep you topped up. You may also want to pre-book an isle seat so you have easy access to the washroom!

  1. Hey Megan,
Great advice. Also, if you're watching your movies on your laptop, be sure to bring your charger because a lot of flights now have AC outlets to charge your laptops. Also if you go to seatgurus.com, it'll tell you what your seat has on the plane. I use that site to plan my seats whenever I travel.

  2. I will vouch for Seat Guru! On my flight over to England, I picked a row on the Boeing 777-300 with only two seats that could recline fully!

  3. I have never heard of Seat Guru before. I love this. I am fairly tall and hate getting stuffed into the seats like a Sardine while some 4 foot nothing person gets the best seat in the house. One of the best tips I have heard for travelling in a long time. Thank you.
