Beers of the world! Czech Republic!

Welcome to… the CZECH REPUBLIC

In the Czech Republic good beer is as common as anywhere in Europe, but what I found most interesting about the Czech’s was their beer’s history. According to Wikipedia the Czech Republic opened its first brewery in Brno in 1118, while many of their competitors did not open their doors until the 13th century! Another fun fact, the Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world! Now that is a lot of beer!

On to specifics; one of their most famous beers, Pilsner Urquell, was created in 1842 in the town of Pilsen. Before then the region was known specifically for its wheat beers, but the first ever pilsner broadened their beer range. Just in case you didn’t catch that yes, I just said that Pilsen’s Pilsner Urquell was the first ever pilsner beer IN THE WORLD! As you can see there has been some pretty exciting stuff happening in the Czech Republic on the beer scene, and we have barely scratched the surface.

While in the city of Pilsen pilsner rules, in Budweis it is all about the Budweiser Budvar! Although here in North America when we hear the word ‘budweiser’ we often think of that ‘cheap beer that gets us through the night’ I can assure you while they may share a similar title the Czech Republic’s Budweiser Budvar was not only first, since it was founded in 1785, but it is also on a much higher scale of beer with their many different varieties and flavours. With this brewery you can choose anything from a Premium Lager to their Bud Super Strong, and don’t go thinking these are just any kinds of beer. Almost all of Budweiser Budvar’s vast beers have one multiple European awards most recently ranging from 2005-2011! With the Czech Republic in its’ cavalry it is plain to see that Europe is the home for some of the best beer around the globe.

Next... The United Kingdom!
