Sports Travel: In the Stands in Foreign Lands!

"LET'S GO COYOTES!" chanted the Phoenix crowd, as the organ music pulsed. The chants for the home team were then countered by visiting Flames fans, including myself! "LET'S GO FLAMES!" That was in 2008. I stepped out of dry 22-degree heat in February to watch my favourite team play hockey, and I realized I was hooked on sports travel!

Cheering on your team on the road is a heart-punding, memorable experience! That being said, it is important to be respectful even if you are cheering for the opposing team. Sports events are family events, so never let your pride for your team inhibit your common sense! Ignoring that can be dangerous!

Since that Flames game in 2008 (which the Flames won!), I have been fortunate to experience the NHL playoffs and a Yankees game in New York City, as well as two Olympics!

I love the build up of energy before a game, the emotion of a full stadium and seeing how a city celebrates its teams!

One of the biggest challenges facing sports fans when travelling is figuring out how to get tickets. If the official website of the team/event does not work out, you may have luck with a ticket reseller website. I have used StubHub for several events across Canada and the US. When using a ticket reseller, tickets may be priced above face value. Be aware of the website's policy in the unlikely event you are sold counterfeit tickets, and you should also watch out for high shipping fees.

I purchased tickets through StubHub to the 2012 NHL Eastern Conference Final between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils! Seeing a heated playoff rivalry in Madison Square Garden was a blast!

Rangers score! I couldn't wait to wave my cheer towel
and chant!

My favourite sporting events I have travelled to were the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and 2012 Summer Olympics in London!

Global events like the Olympics are amazing because one city becomes a microcosm of the entire world!

Walking through Olympic Park in London, it was a delight to high-five Jamaican fans imitating Usain Bolt, French fans wearing rooster costumes, and Dutch fans covered in orange!

My first professional soccer game was the 2012 Olympic Women's Gold Medal final between the US and Japan! I was heartbroken Canada was not in the game, but 82000+ cheering fans at Wembley Stadium made the experience an unforgettable one!

Seeing sports when I travel has added another layer of great memories to my trips! I hope it can do the same for you. See you in the stands!
